Only the Best

When I purchased the St. Helena property that would become Marciano Estate there were twenty acres of vines planted here. It was 2006, and in that first year I tried to make the best wine that I could with the existing vineyard. It was a good wine, but it wasn’t an outstanding wine – it wasn’t the wine that I sought to make. I decided to pull out all the vines and replant with four different rootstocks better suited to the varied soil conditions of the property.

I asked David Abreu to join me, to help with the replant and to manage the new vineyard. During that process I replanted only ten acres out of the twenty – on only the best soils of the vineyard.

Our first great vintage was 2012 – a fine growing season in Napa Valley by all standards and the year our new vineyard came into maturity. M

A Team of Specialists

The Right Man for the Job

“If you want to make great wine, you cannot cut corners. That has always been my philosophy.”

When I started this project, I looked for likeminded people to help bring my dreams to fruition. People who were as single-mindedly obsessed with quality as me. That’s what brought me to David Abreu, Andy Erickson and Morgan Maurèze.

As soon as I met David, I could feel his passion, how much he cared about vineyards. The properties he looks after are beautiful, the vines manicured to perfection. I call him the poet of the vines.

He never compromises, and I love that in him.

It’s the same with Andy. When I met him we talked about the kind of wines he likes to make, and about the textures he looks for, which is very important to me. I tasted his wines, and there was no question; I knew he was an amazing winemaker. Andy is always pushing, always experimenting. Always trying something different, trying to make the wine better. Striving for perfection.

Marciano Estate - The Team
David Abreu, Maurice Marciano, Morgan Maurèze, and Andy Erickson

It was Andy who introduced me to Morgan, our full time winemaker and director. Morgan worked with Andy at Erickson Consulting, and for nine years helped me to launch my winery project while assisting other clients such as Dalle Valle, Arietta, Screaming Eagle, and Dancing Hares. French-born but raised primarily in the U.S., Morgan has deep wine experience in both countries, with a resume that includes Ovid Vineyards, Domaine de la Romanée

Conti, Château Haut Brion, Etablissements JP Moueix, and Dominus Estate.

In Morgan, as with David and Andy, I knew I had found a kindred spirit, someone who stops at nothing to achieve the finest quality possible not only in winemaking, but in all aspects of running the winery. Our Marciano Estate team is complete. M

Art Love

The Property as Gallery

For me, great art is like great wine. Something to take pleasure in, to be passionate about.  And above all, something to be shared. Marciano Estate has become a wonderful home for many of the pieces of

contemporary art I’ve collected over the last 25 years. These sculptures and paintings – and the artists who created them – continually inspire me. M
